How teams qualify for the knockout stage

The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four, and each team plays the other three in its group once. Qualification for the Round of 32 works as follows:

  • The top two teams in every group advance automatically — that is 24 teams.
  • The eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also advance — a further 8 teams.
  • Together that forms a 32-team knockout bracket: Round of 32 → Round of 16 → Quarter-finals → Semi-finals → Final.

When ranking the third-placed teams, FIFA applies these tiebreakers in order: points, goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary record (fewest yellow and red cards), and finally FIFA ranking. This means finishing third is no longer automatic elimination — but only the best eight third-placed sides survive, so every goal in the group stage matters.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage has completed its entire opening round — all 12 groups have now played their first matches. The final day of openers brought history and drama: DR Congo scored their first-ever World Cup goal to hold Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal to a draw, England edged Croatia 4-2 in a six-goal thriller, Ghana grabbed a stoppage-time winner over Panama, and Colombia saw off debutants Uzbekistan 3-1. Matchday 2 begins June 18. Below are the latest World Cup 2026 standings and results.

Talking points from the opening matches

The first few days of World Cup 2026 have already produced drama, history and a statement from the hosts.

The United States made the loudest noise. A commanding 4–1 win over Paraguay in front of a roaring home crowd was the standout result of the opening round, immediately positioning the co-hosts as Group D favourites and setting an early benchmark for the other host nations.

Qatar produced the shock of the round. Switzerland dominated their meeting — holding 68 percent possession and outshooting Qatar 26 to 7 — and led through a Breel Embolo penalty. But Qatar refused to break, and Boualem Khoukhi headed home a 94th-minute equaliser to claim the nation’s first-ever World Cup point. The result left all four Group B teams level on a single point, making it the tournament’s tightest group so far.

Scotland made history. John McGinn’s strike against Haiti was Scotland’s first World Cup goal in 28 years, enough for a 1–0 win that lifted them above five-time champions Brazil at the top of Group C. Brazil, held to a 1–1 draw by a sharp Morocco side, were reminded that the 2022 semi-finalists remain a genuine threat.

A fiery curtain-raiser. Mexico opened the tournament with a 2–0 win over South Africa at a packed Estadio Azteca, though the match was punctuated by three red cards — a sign of just how high the stakes feel even in the first round.
