How the World Cup 2026 bracket works

This is the first World Cup with 48 teams, and that expansion created a brand-new opening knockout round. After the group stage, 32 teams advanced into a straight knockout bracket: the 12 group winners, the 12 runners-up, and the eight best third-placed sides. From the Round of 32 onward, it has been win or go home at every step.
The bracket is fixed, with no redraws, so every team has known its potential path to the final from the very start. If a knockout game is level after 90 minutes, it goes to 30 minutes of extra time, and if the sides are still tied, a penalty shootout settles it. There are no replays and no away goals. This tournament has shown exactly how cruel that can be, with penalties and stoppage-time winners deciding some of the biggest ties.
Semi-final results

The semi-finals delivered a Spanish masterclass and another Argentine escape, setting up a final nobody could have scripted better.
| Tie | Result |
|---|---|
| Spain vs France | 2-0 |
| Argentina vs England | 2-1 |
Spain were imperious against France in Dallas. Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty in the 22nd minute after Lamine Yamal was fouled, and Pedro Porro added a second early in the second half, as Unai Simon kept another clean sheet against the tournament’s most dangerous attack. Argentina, as they have all tournament, did it the hard way. Trailing England 1-0 late on, Lionel Messi set up two goals in seven minutes, with Enzo Fernandez levelling and Lautaro Martinez heading a stoppage-time winner. Full detail is on our semi-finals guide.
Quarter-final results

The last eight produced two comfortable wins and two extra-time thrillers, and delivered the strongest semi-final field in World Cup history.
| Tie | Result |
|---|---|
| France vs Morocco | 2-0 |
| Spain vs Belgium | 2-1 |
| England vs Norway | 2-1 (AET) |
| Argentina vs Switzerland | 3-1 (AET) |
France ended Morocco’s run in a repeat of the 2022 semi-final. Spain conceded for the first time in the tournament but still saw off Belgium, whose golden generation bowed out. England needed extra time and a Jude Bellingham double to beat Erling Haaland’s Norway, and Argentina came from behind against ten-man Switzerland, with Julian Alvarez settling it with a stunning extra-time strike. The full round is on our quarter-finals guide.
Round of 16 results

The last 16 was one of the most dramatic knockout rounds in memory, with the host nations falling one by one and two of the game’s greatest players saying goodbye.
| Tie | Result |
|---|---|
| Canada vs Morocco | 0-3 |
| Paraguay vs France | 0-1 |
| Brazil vs Norway | 1-2 |
| Mexico vs England | 2-3 |
| Spain vs Portugal | 1-0 |
| Belgium vs USA | 4-1 |
| Argentina vs Egypt | 3-2 |
| Switzerland vs Colombia | 0-0 (Switzerland win 4-3 on pens) |
Morocco swept aside co-hosts Canada, Norway’s Haaland knocked out Brazil, England edged Mexico with ten men at a raucous Estadio Azteca, and Spain ended Portugal’s run and Ronaldo’s career with a late winner. Argentina survived a two-goal deficit against Egypt, and Switzerland won a penalty shootout against Colombia. The full round is on our Round of 16 guide.
How the Round of 32 unfolded

The first knockout round was chaos in the best possible way. Two of the pre-tournament favourites, Germany and the Netherlands, were both dumped out on penalties, by Paraguay and Morocco respectively. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first ever World Cup knockout goal, Haaland ended Norway’s long wait for a knockout win, and Cape Verde took Argentina all the way to extra time before bowing out as heroes. Egypt and Switzerland ended waits stretching back decades, and the United States claimed a knockout win for the first time since 2002. Here is the full record.
| Round of 32 result | Round of 32 result |
|---|---|
| South Africa 0-1 Canada | Belgium 3-2 Senegal (AET) |

The two finalists

Spain are champions of the world for the second time, sixteen years after their only previous triumph in 2010. It was built on the meanest defence the tournament has seen, conceding just one goal across eight matches, with goalkeeper Unai Simon keeping a record seven clean sheets on his way to the Golden Glove. Teenager Lamine Yamal provided the spark, captain Rodri collected the Golden Ball, and substitute Ferran Torres delivered the moment that mattered most.
Argentina came up one game short of history. No nation has won back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962, and that record still stands after a final in which they failed to register a single shot on target. Led by Lionel Messi in what is almost certainly his final World Cup, they are the tournament’s highest-scoring side and have made a habit of dramatic late escapes. They fell at the final hurdle, and Messi left the field in tears at the end of what is almost certainly his last World Cup. Read about both finalists on our team profiles page, and track the scoring race on our Golden Boot page.
The road to the final

The knockout stage has had everything. Germany and the Netherlands fell on penalties in the Round of 32. All three co-hosts crashed out in the Round of 16, along with Brazil and Portugal, and Ronaldo said goodbye. The quarter-finals gave us two extra-time classics, and the semi-finals produced a Spanish statement and yet another Argentine comeback. Now it comes down to a single match at MetLife Stadium, with one nation chasing history and the other chasing a first title in sixteen years. This is what the whole tournament has been building towards. Official information is on FIFA’s site.
